BioLet®
The Best Selling Biological Toilet In The World
bar.gif - 4.5 K

The fifth generation biological toilets are as easy and comfortable to use as regular flush toilets. The main advantage over the flush toilet is that there is no need for costly installations of water and sewer lines, nor the installation of a septic tank and leach field. Also BioLet does not pollute lakes and streams. BioLet toilet is is a patented biological waste treatment system which evaporates excessive moisture and decomposes human waste with the help of nature's own microorganisms. The controlled supply of heat and air and the periodic mixing of the compost speeds up the composition process and transforms human waste into a harmless product, which is beneficial when returned to the soil.

In warm weather, nature aerobic soil microorganisms digest and transform leaves and other organic debris into a hygienic, inoffensive soil component called "humus". Humus provides the nutrients for new plant growth and holds moisture in the soil. Gardeners around the world utilize this process when they compost yard and garden waste and use the humus as fertilizer.

The BioLet controls the process with modern technology to accelerate and optimize biological decomposition, evaporates excess liquid, exhausts odors and water vapor ... All within an attractive home appliance that is easy to use and economical to operate.

The process is initiated by establishing a healthy compost inside the mixing chamber. A convenient package of Humus Starter containing the correct blend of organic materials is poured through the toilet seat opening into the mixing chamber. Connect the ventilation pipe, plug the electrical cord into a standard grounded outlet and the BioLet is ready for use.

Mechanical mixing and aerating makes the compost porous and sifts the humus into the collecting tray. In the 20 Deluxe model, a microswitch controlled motor turns the internal mixers. In the Standard model, a convenient external handle coupled to an internal gear box operates the mixers with a gentle turn after each use.

In the electric models, a small heater with an adjustable thermostat and an efficient air blower work together to provide heat and sufficient air flow to reduce human waste by up to 90%. The heater evaporates excess liquid while maintaining warm temperature and the air blower exhausts odor and provides oxygen for the microorganisms. The dry 10% remainder or humus collected in the lower tray can safely be recycled to the soil where the nutrients will be utilized for new plant growth.

When used primarily in a part-time summer home or cabin, the BioLet toilets will manage the waste from 4 to 6 people, with some occasional overload. However, the BioLet 60 XL has been certified by the National Sanitation Foundation to serve 4 people in a full time residential setting. The BioLet cannot be damaged by freezing nor will it rust or corrode as all process components that contact the waste are of stainless steel or high impact ABS plastic. Install the BioLet NE (nonelectrical) in applications where bringing 110VAC to the building is either impractical or too expensive. Where there is insufficient heat/or natural convection to evaporate excess liquid, a small drainage system may be required. The NE is equipped with a one inch drain for this purpose.

For Part Time Use The Humus-Tray Need Only Be Emptied Once A Year
Top

TRAY2.jpg - 12.4 K Usage and ambient temperature will determine the actual frequency, but in a part time cabin or summer home, annual removal of the humus is sufficient. During this period, excrement and paper have been completely transformed into valuable humus. When the compost mixing chamber is filled, simply remove the front cover, pull out the tray with the processed humus and trench it into the soil where the nutrients will be used for new plant growth. Return the empty tray and activate the mixing mechanism to sift down the compost refilling the tray. This provides more room in the compost mixing chamber for continued operation. The BioLet NE does not have a tray. However, the humus is disposed of in the same manner after removing and emptying the composting container located in the back of the toilet

Instead of polluting lakes and streams, the BioLet transfers human waste into a valuable material that is safely returned to the soil.

Principles Of Operation

DIAGRAM2.jpg - 8.7 KThe ventilation pipe leads moist air away. It also ventilates the entire bathroom so additional ventilation is not needed. The adjustable thermostat combined with the patented, heated air recirculation results in a very low energy cost. the fan drives warm air through the air channels and under the compost. This provides the compost with a plentiful supply of oxygen and warms it up to optimum temperature. When you lift the lid all you see is a white disk. The compost cover opens automatically when the seat is pressed down.

Frequently Asked Questions
Top

1) How many people will use it and for how long during the year?
Ans.- (Our ratings are based on four uses per person per day). Include here the full time residents, guests, vacation use, business place and intensity. You can always expect it to be adequate for a few more people for short periods of time throughout the year. The solution for a higher use rate is to choose the larger model or buy two toilets. Note: Soiltech always discounts for purchases of more than one toilet. Another thought develops here and that is: If my friend and I both buy can we combine a purchase and get a discount? The answer is , YES, we are glad to do this.

2) Where will you put your toilet?
Ans.- The minimum temperature for composting is 64 degrees F. which is the average room temperature. Therefore when you will be using one year round in colder climes it will have to be in a room that is heated (with as little as a light bulb the composting can be kept going). There is no need to provide heat if you install in a vacation place without heat when not in use - freezing does no harm to the BioLet and the compost action will resume when the space is warmed up.

3) Do you have electricity?
Ans.-If not the Non Electric performs great. We advise to do a couple of things to assist in the evaporation of excess liquid such as running the vent pipe next to other heat sources like a furnace pipe, run a drain line to a small leaching pit (18"x18"x24") or indoor/outdoor planter & a 12v fan is also available.

4)Will there be an odor?
Ans.- No.Not if the ventilation kit is properly installed. These work on the principle of a partial vacuum and air is pulled into the toilet taking away with it the odors.

5)How much material will I take out?
Ans.-An example is the XL with 4 full time users. There will be 26 pounds of humus produced in 1 month. But the longer it remains in the unit the more it will be reduced to heat, carbon dioxide and water vapor. Timing and usage patterns are the final determining factors. For the Non Electric 4 full time users will commonly empty a composting container 6 times a year.

6) What will I do with the composted matter ( humus )?
Ans.- It should be trenched in to soil (around trees, shrubs, flower beds). If you can't use it, give it to someone that can or have a septic tank service pick it up. In some places it can go out with your garbage but if in doubt what to do, ask your local health agent.

7) What is the worst thing that can happen?
Ans.- All of the biologic process stops (from additions of bleach or too much liquid) in which case it becomes a holding tank until it is emptied and restarted.

8)Do I put anything in to aid the composting?
Ans.- Yes, put in the starter mix that comes with the new toilet. Then you will make additions of starter mix or peat moss or other high carbon materials to keep it going.
Other good additives are popped popcorn, potato peels, rice or wheat hulls & old bread.

9) How much are you willing to maintain a composting toilet?
Ans.- These require very little maintenance for the vacation place and it increases mildly with more use. Some people hire services to empty humus for a small fee.

How long have we been using flush toilets? Surprisingly, to most people, they have only been in use about 75 years ( many of our grandparents never had one in their home .)

Life on this planet is maintained by the fundamental processes of consumption and excretion. The culture of consumption is highly refined while the resulting process of excretion is considered only as something to be hidden away and filthy. This has lead to our culture's misuse of our soil and water resources to accomplish this. While we waste these resources their resultant polluted condition is always increasingly apparent.

Once we think of processing our refuse ( not waste ) by composting we start to make a difference in the places where we live.

The first waterless toilet was built in Sweden in 1939. Today their use is widespread in all Scandinavian countries. Some entire villages are going (no pun) this way.

There has never been a reported illness by anyone from the use of a composting toilet. Recent studies have shown the ways that aerosols from flush toilets are produced. These are spread by room air currents and picked up by the residents. These aerosols carry with them the bacteria and viruses that are found in toilets.

Composting toilets do not produce aerosols.
When comparing the use of composting toilets to the use of leach fields and septic tanks what is there to consider? Pollution of water and soil, maintenance, life expectancy of the system are some. What does septic mean anyway? It means to make putrid. Many hazardous compounds are produced when refuse is put into a waterborne septic system. Do these pollute? Did you ever see one fail and how did you know it did? Was it spewing up through the surface of the soil or was it backed up into the building and how much escaped out of your site below the ground into your aquifer? How long are septic systems designed for? The average effective life is 15 years. New regulations are coming out that will require that a licensed hauler document that you have had your tank pumped every 3 years. Why don't they last longer? They can if you divert the solids from your toilets and garbage disposal and this can be done by composting both of these. Septic systems can actually be revitalized and renewed if these steps are taken. In Mass. the BioLet is specifically approved to do this where people are facing these problems and have no where to turn (no more space to establish a new septic system ).

Following to ponder :
  • Just how many gallons of fresh drinking water are used to carry away a little reusable refuse?
  • How much fertilizer, nitrogen &organic humus is totally misplaced and lost to flush systems?
  • Will my contribution make a difference?
  • Fact : You conserve all of the above and money with a composting toilet.
  • Mulltoa! This is the most common term used in Scandinavia for a composting toilet. Generically it means - BioLet!
