Participants will learn about Amish society’s health care, mental health and eldercare beliefs and practices to become more sensitive to Amish cultural influences in these areas. Learn about health care systems used by the Amish, genetic diseases and studies, and ethical issues in Amish health care. Understand mental health clinical issues with Amish and formerly-Amish clients, using a case study to illustrate appropriate counseling techniques. Intergenerational family life, the Daadi house, and care of the aged are discussed to understand the Amish attitude toward aging, death and dying. Learn culturally sensitive guidelines for professionals and appropriate referrals to community resources.

Participants will study the current Ohio Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage & Family Therapist Board Code of Ethical Practice and Professional Conduct and learn how to apply the code to competent practice. Also discussed are ethical dilemmas, steps in ethical decision making, and guidelines for ethical practice and risk management.

PROFESSIONAL ETHICS: BOUNDARY CHALLENGES AND RISK MANAGEMENT

Participants will study the current Ohio Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board Code of Ethical Practice and Professional Conduct and learn how to apply the code to competent practice. Learn how to identify major risk areas for ethical violations, manage therapist-client boundary challenges, and risk management strategies for agencies and practitioners.

CASE RECORDING FOR SOCIAL WORKERS

Social workers must carefully document their work with clients through systematic and timely case recording. In this “hands-on” workshop, participants will apply principles of good writing to case records and learn ethical standards for documentation. Also learn how to write measurable goals and objectives and how to protect yourself with case recording guidelines. Participants will learn the advantages of using a structured case recording format and practice using SOAP or WORD with a videotaped interview.
