Grandmother Hinds

     Mrs. Mary Ann Hinds died Friday, July 26, at the home of her
daughter, Flora D. Hinds of Canton, at the age of 85 years.
     Grandmother Hinds, as she was familiarly known was a remarkably
well preserved woman, and enjoyed excellent health until about a year ago
when she was taken seriously ill. She apparently recovered and was able to
go about again as usual. Last February she went to Canton to visit with
her daughters, Flora Hinds and Mrs. Walter, and in May was taken back
down sick in bed. The family noted her gradual loss of vitality and realized
the end was near.
     Since the death of her husband, Oct. 10, 1908, Mrs. Hinds has made
her home with her daughter, Mrs. D.C. Whiting of this city, making
extended visits from time to time with the other children.
     Mary Ann Huff was born in Belmont County October 3, 1833. After
her marriage to Westley Hinds, they resided for some time in the Rodney
Run neighborhood.
     Later, they removed to Newcomerstown, then to Iowa, where they
resided over a year, then returned to this neighborhood. Mrs. Hinds was
the mother of nine children, six of whom survive. They are: Mrs. R.H.
Phillips, of Oreana, Ill., Ezra Hinds of Portland, Oregon, Mrs. H. P.
Walter and Flora D. Hinds of Canton, Elisha Hinds and Mrs. D. C.
Whiting of this city.
     Mrs. Hinds united with the U. B. church at Everals many years ago.
The body was brought back to this city Saturday Night in the D. L.
Lyrick's auto hearse. Funeral services were held on Sunday at the Whiting
home on Main St., conducted by Rev. M. L. Oliver. Burial was made
beside the grave of her husband in the local cemetery.

4. ELIAS3 HINDS (ELISHA2, EZRA1) was born December 01, 1823, and died February 25, 1884 in Adams Township, Coshocton County, Ohio. He married SUSAN A. PHILLIPS December 17, 1856 in Coshocton County Ohio, daughter of ELIJAH PHILLIPS and KASIAH SMITH.

Elias Hinds on October 1, 1856, married Susan Ann Phillips who was born February 7, 1831, in Cuyahoga County, New York, whence she came in 1838 to Lafayette Township, Coshocton County, with her parents, Elijah H. and Kasiah Smith Phillips. In 1853 they moved with several children to Adams Township, where Elias and Susan A. Hinds began their married life on a farm, where he died, February 25, 1884, and she died,
March 6, 1887. They had thirteen children, of whom nine reached maturity and six are living. (1908) Of these, John Hinds was born November 22, 1868, and was married on June 5, 1891, to Cora John, who was born April 16,1872, and was the youngest of ten children of Alfred and Sarah Ann Norris John of Salem Township, Tuscarawas County. Alfred John was born March 20, 1832, and Sarah Ann Norris John was born
November 16, 1833, and both are in good health. (1908)John and Cora Hinds have had three children. Sanford Blake, the eldest, was born December 29, 1892. On July 12, 1907, when a boat holding six of his friends upset in the Tuscarawas River, he plunged from his own boat to their rescue and was drowned, while all the rest were saved. A mission church in India has been named in honor of his noble heroism. Walter Ray was born September 30, 1894, and Frances Gertrude was born August 7, 1906. Mr. Hinds (John Hinds) at
first began business on the paternal farm in Coshocton County, from which he moved March 1, 1893, to Newcomerstown, where he bought an interest in a general store that he purchased in full in the fall of 1894. After making several changes with profit, he purchased and remodled his present property in 1900, where his business has prospered in a satisfactory degree, so that today as a reward for sagacious energy and affable attention, he has won the reputation of being a leading citizen in his community.

Dies in Oregon

     Ezra Hinds, 82, native of Newcomerstown, died July 28th, at his
home in Portland, Oregon.
     Mr. hinds moved from Ohio to Oregon in 1907 and his last visit to
Ohio was two years ago. He is survived by a son, Francis L. Hinds, four
daughters, Mrs. Mary DeBarthe with whom he lived, Mrs. Ruth Jessee,
Rainer, Washington, Mrs. Nora McDougall Mrs. Ilia Cole, both of
Portland; a brother, Elisha Hinds, First st. and a sister, Mrs Ara
Walters, Canal st.
     Burial was made at Portland, Saturday, July 28.

W.F. Wise

     W. F. Wise, 74, former local resident, died Thursday at his home in Loudenville from complications.
     He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Charles Opphile and Mrs. Authur Meeks, both of
Newcomerstown, four step-children, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
     Services were held Sunday afternoon from the Baptist church at Loudenville and burial was made in the
State street cemetery.

L. Marcella Parks
     L. Marcella Parks, 83, a resident of Riverside Manor Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center and a lifelong Newcomerstown resident, died late
Wednesday night, Feb. 11,(1998) in Coshocton County Memorial
Hospital.
     Marcella was born in Newcomerstown on May 31, 1914 a daughter
of the late Clement F. "Jack" Eagon, who died in 1957, and the late
Nora Schide Eagon, who died in 1919. She was a 1932 graduate of
Newcomerstown High School.
     She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and its
Fellowship Sunday School Class, Thomas Montgomery Post 431 of the
American Legion Auxillary at Newcomerstown. Marcella was a
homemaker for all her adult life and was an avid reader and enjoyed
working crossword puzzles.
     She was married June 8, 1938 to W. Robert Parks, who died Jan.
30,1990. Also deceased are two brothers, Robert Eagon of El Paso,
Texas, who died in 1989, and Roger C. Eagon of Hartville who died in
1992, and a stepbrother, Max Tyhurst of Newcomerstown, who died in
1978.
     Marcella is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, William E.
and Leslie Parks of Oklahoma City and Dennis R. Parks of Columbus;
a granddaughter and her husband, Lisa and Scott Summers of
Oklahoma City; a brother and two sister-in-law. Rodney and Bertha
Eagon of Newcomerstown and Shirley Eagon of El Paso; two brother-
in-law, H. Gene and Paul Parks of Newcomerstown; a sister-in-law and
her husband, Annabelle and Garner Stocker of Newcomerstown; and
several nieces and nephews.
     Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at 11 a.m. in
Ourant Funeral Home at Newcomerstown with Rev. Gary George and
Glenn Brunstetter officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may call in the funeral home Friday(tonight) from 6 to 8 p.m.
and Saturday one hour before the funeral.
     The family suggests memorials to be made to Christ United
Methodist Church, 648 Oak St., Newcomerstown, O. 43832
